3-day adventure expedition into the Danakil Depression. From Mekelle we drive to Erta Ale volcano, which we will climb at night and camp at the rim of the crater. On the next day, we admire the traditional salt mining at lake Afrera before we proceed to Hamed Ela for the second night. On the third day, we explore early in the morning the surreal landscapes of Dallol and meet the huge camel caravans transporting the salt blocks to the Highlands before we leave the desert and return back to Mekele,
This is a round trip staring from and returning to Mekele. We offer daily departures joining a group. Please note that depending on the local conditions, we might also do this tour in the opposite direction heading first to Dallol and returning via Erta Ale to Mekele.
Start your journey with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by experienced drivers with well-equipped 4WD vehicles and a dedicated team, including expert guides, a cook, local guides, a road leader, and a police escort. Depart immediately for Hamedela town near Dallol, bringing all necessary camping gear for your adventure. In the late afternoon, visit the breathtaking sunset at Lake Assale. Spend the night camping under the open sky, with clean beds, mattresses, pillows, and ample hydration (6 liters of water per person per day).
Rise early and drive to the Dallol geothermal site before sunrise to witness its surreal, vibrant landscape—a unique spectacle unmatched anywhere else on Earth. Marvel at live chemical reactions creating dazzling colors and otherworldly formations. Next, explore the salt and mud-formed mountain cave beneath the Dallol crater and enjoy a picnic breakfast nearby. Visit the vast salt plains and Lake Karum, where you can take a dip in the saltwater pool, and observe the local salt miners at work.
After lunch and a brief rest in Hamedela, head to Erta Ale, the active volcano known for its glowing lava lake. Upon arrival, hike for about 30 minutes to the summit crater. Spend the evening marveling at the fiery lava lake before returning to the campsite for overnight open-air camping with comfortable amenities on a flat, quiet ground.
Wake up with the sunrise and enjoy breakfast before driving to Afdera, a town at -102 meters below sea level, known for its salt production and intense heat. Visit the salt lake, take a walk along the salt farms, and gain insights into the local salt industry. After lunch in town, begin the drive back to Semera and continue onward to Mekele. Conclude your adventure with an overnight stay in Mekele, marking the end of the unforgettable Danakil Depression tour.
